How much sleep does a dog need?

 Back to blog
The amount of sleep a dog needs will vary depending on their age, breed and personality.

As a guide puppies need between 18 - 20 hours sleep in a 24 hour period. Whilst most adults will need less at 12 - 14 hours.

Not all dogs, especially puppies, are good at resting as much as they should. Given the opportunity, when she was younger, Mango would have tried to stay awake all day!

So to stop her from getting over tied we popped her into her crate for some rest. This really helped her when she was struggling to settle and she was usually asleep within minutes!

Now Mango is better at settling outside of her crate, however we still use it daily to make sure she gets a chance to fully switch off and relax.
You don't have to use a crate if you don't want to, or if your dog isn't used to one. However it's important that your dog has somewhere quiet and cosy to rest where they won't be disturbed. An area away from the main hub of the home is ideal for this.
